This is our top burger of 2025! Last year, we each had our favorites—Jernej preferred his burger with homemade BBQ sauce, while mine included arugula and brie cheese. However, this year's standout is the Smash Burger. Although this is the first year we made it at home, it wasn't our first time trying one. We had the opportunity to taste a famous Smash Burger at Shake Shack in New York, where the burger is created by smashing the meat patty directly onto the pan or grill. It was delicious, but our homemade version surpasses it (in our honest opinion) because we use only our favorite, local ingredients. The result is a juicy, flavorful, and unforgettable burger that’s easy to make any time of year.

Essential ingredients

This simple, quick-to-make burger is packed with delicious layers made from top-quality ingredients. Here’s what you’ll need to make it:

  • Buns: Use your favorite store-bought brioche buns — soft and tasty — or make them at home. For this smash burger, we recommend these homemade sesame buns.

  • Sauce: You only need four ingredients for the sauce — mayonnaise, ketchup, onion, and pickles. It’s the finishing touch that brings everything together, so we don’t recommend skipping it.

  • Meat patties: Make them at home. We used Z'dežele ground beef, which has a great fat ratio for juicy, flavorful patties that cook perfectly in a pan or on the grill.

  • Cheese: Choose a cheese that melts well. Our top pick is Cheddar.

  • Vegetables: Yes, this burger includes veggies too — thinly sliced onion, crisp fresh lettuce, and thin slices of tomato.

METHOD

  • sauce

    In a bowl, mix together mayonnaise, ketchup, diced onion, and diced pickles. Stir until smooth to form a sauce.

    Divide the meat into six portions. Shape each portion into a ball, then season with salt and pepper. Place them on a tray or plate. Cut the burger buns in half and spread both cut sides with butter. Toast them on a grill or in a hot pan for a few seconds until lightly golden.

  • grill the meat

    Place the first two meat balls onto a hot grill or into a hot pan. If you're using a grill and have enough space, you can cook all the patties at once. Cut squares out of parchment paper and place two sheets over each meat ball. Press down firmly with a spatula to flatten the meat into a thin patty. Remove the paper. Cook the meat for one minute, until the edges turn golden and crispy. Add three slices of onion, then flip the patty with a spatula. Add two slices of cheese and cover with a lid. Cook just until the cheese melts, about 15–30 seconds.

  • SMASH BURGER

    Spread the sauce on the bottom bun, add two lettuce leaves, two meat patties, and two slices of tomato. Top with the upper half of the bun, also spread with sauce. Serve immediately.
